The Object Management Group (OMG, see www.omg.org) has recently established the BPMN model interchange working group (BPMN MIWG). This new group has the mission, amongst others, to develop a test framework for an improved interchange of process models using the BPMN format among different tools which are using the BPMN 2.0 modeling language.
At BPM-X we are proud to support this interchange standard and initiative of the OMG, as we know that the approach of using the XPDL scheme for the interchange of BPMN models can be problematic.
Currently we address the shortcomings of XPDL for BPMN interchange with a flexible approach of an enterprise service bus design involving BPMN 2.0-compatible pluggable adapters implementing different XPDL dialects of tools.
In addition to the BPMN 2.0 http://www.omg.org/spec/BPMN/2.0 modeling language the OMG describes an own BPMN-specific interchange format. Besides implementing the BPMN standard in a modeling tool it is even more important to have a test framework to validate vendor-specific BPMN import and export tool capabilities against the standard specification.
